Great Sand Dunes

After Black Canyon we drove to Great Sand Dunes, a kind of strange place as there are these pretty large sand dunes between a completely flat valley and the Sangre De Christo Mountain Range. Sand Dunes are not foreign to us, but just there in the middle of “no where” far from the water is kind of strange.

We found a nice spot on the campground, with an almost unobstructed view of the dunes.

The first day here we visited the brand new visitor center and we all got to play in Medano Creek, which has fairly warm water as it runs over the warm sand. Felix was very happy playing, but even happier that he got mom to build mud castles and dad to build canals. In spite of warm weather, and warm water, Felix did get a bit cold so we packed up and went back to the campground. In the evening we hiked up on the dunes to take sunset pictures.

Felix was really proud to walk the whole way (about an hour each way) – only getting a bit of help in the end. The view, and light, up there was really nice. We had a great time – especially Felix who was running up the dunes and rolling down again all the time.

The next day Felix was a bit under the weather – maybe be because he got cold from playing in the water the previous day, but a ranger could get him exited enough to hold a Tiger Salamander (which lives in the dunes).
